The Behr Bonsai Scholarship
Bonsai Vault has established a scholarship fund in the memory of Behr (Grampz) Appleby (1948-2009) to skilled students / enthusiasts of bonsai seeking a education to improve their art and the bonsai community as a whole. The scholarship will be awarded to an individual(s) for the purpose of achieving a more advanced level of bonsai.

The concept of this scholarship is to encourage and support budding bonsai artists in the fashion Behr showed and demonstrated through his commitment to the art over many, many years. In turn, any individual(s) receiving this scholarship must, with in one year of the award, demonstrate to the Behr Scholarship Fund the knowledge that they have acquired. This demonstration of knowledge must be displayed in four distinct different ways.

The individual(s) must present an article with images to Bonsai Vault for publication, describing what they learned from their chosen instructor. The individual must also be able to display verifiable events where they have passed along this knowledge to others via the internet, club publication, or any other source that is documented. The individual must demonstrate the acquired skills to the individual's bonsai club, association, or society and this must be verified by two people from that organization. Finally the person will submit a photographic journal on the progression of the material worked that was influenced by the person(s) acquired knowledge for publication.

A scholarship that is granted usually implies something won based on merit or something that is earned. Applicants wishing to apply for this scholarship must:

  • Individuals interested in the scholarship should submit an application to Bonsai Vault. With the application the individual must submit a letter of approval from a recognized artist, or from their chosen recognized artist / instructor verifying that the applicant meets the requirements of the scholarship to Behrbonsaischolarship@bonsaivault.com
  • Upon the receipt of the application you will be sent an email acknowledging your desire for this scholarship.
  • The applicant must also post a minimum of three trees in the designated thread for this scholarship on Bonsai Vault which shall coincide with the application submission. These images must be high quality to show the seriousness and skill level of the individual. In that thread a summary should be included as to what the applicant intends to focus on with their chosen instructor, and who that person is.
  • This scholarship is open to all ,world wide, that wish to apply.
Each scholarship, not to exceed two in  one year, in the amount of $500.00(usd) dollars maybe used for instruction and/or material. The material cost may not exceed $125.00 (usd). The scholarship will pay out the funds to the individual's chosen instructor in the name of the applicant. If the individual decides to apply part of their scholarship to material, that amount will be paid to the vendor as well.

The fund will only pay out full scholarships. In the event that the fund does not have the balance to offer a second scholarship those funds will be held over to the following year. The fund will be awarded each January to be applied for that calendar year.

The status of the fund and its balance will be displayed in a forum thread at Bonsai Vault. Individuals making contributions will be recognized in that thread with the balance.
